FIRST DAY: FROM PORTO DO PERAFITA
Our journey to Santiago de Compostela began in the city of Porto, in the north of Portugal. On the first day we started out early and made our way down to the Douro River. Passing under the Arrábida Bridge, we followed west along the river all the way to where it encounters the ocean. From this point we turned north and continued a beautiful 5-hour, 10 mile seaside walk.

The boardwalks were our trails on the walk along the sea. We walked 31 kilometers along the boardwalks without ever stepping on the ground. The aim is to protect the biodiversity. In Portugal we saw that there is a great deal of respect for nature.

| TRAGEDY AT SEA along the coast in Matosinhos |
Inspired by a painting by the famous artist, Agusto Gomes, the sculptural
ensemble "Tragedy at Sea", by José João Brito (2005) remembers the greatest nautical
tragedy ever recorded along the Portuguese coast. In a storm on December 1 to 2, 1947,
several fishing boars were sunk off Leixões Port, causing the death of 152 crew members
and resulting in the pain and despair of the entire community. The tragedy left 72 widows
and 152 orphans in its wake.
